Introduction
Your hair loss may have started with a few extra hairs in the sink or in your comb. But now you can't look in the mirror without seeing more of your scalp.
Baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp and can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition. Anyone — men, women and children — can experience hair loss.

WHAT IS HAIR ?
The scalp hair you see is physiologically speaking, 'dead'. It has no blood, muscles or nerves. Hair grows from a single follicle, an indentation in the skin, and each follicle has its own blood, nerve and muscle supply.
 
For a 'dead' fiber, scalp hair is remarkable. A healthy hair can stretch up to another 30% of its length, can absorb its weight in water and can swell up to 20% of its diameter. It has extraordinary insulating powers, rivaling that of asbestos. Its strength is greater than that of copper wire of the same diameter. A single scalp hair can support a weight of 100g and an average head of hair twisted together can support 23 tons.
What Is hair made of ??
The hair fiber that you see is composed of a protein called keratin, compacted and cemented together in layers. Keratin is a remarkably strong protein, very resistant to wear and tear and also makes up feathers, claws, nails and hoofs.
 
Each scalp hair consists of two or three layers, depending on whether an intermittent central transparent core is present. Around this core is the cortex of the hair shaft, which is the thickest layer and contains the pigment - giving your hair its color. The outer layer is the cuticle which is protective and, when smooth and intact, is reflective - giving your hair its shine.
How Does Hair Grow ??
Each hair grows from a hair follicle, which is a part of the outer layer of the skin that is 'sunk' in to the deeper layers of the skin to form a tube-like sac. Each of us is born with a specific number of follicles, which cannot be changed. Each one can produce 20 or so hairs in a lifetime.
 
Each follicle’s nerves and muscles give the hair its tactile properties, allowing the slightest movement to be felt. When the muscles contract, the hair stands up more and pinches the skin, causing ‘goose bumps’.
The blood capillaries surrounding the base of the follicle carry the nourishment needed for cell production and growth. Hair cell reproduction is the second most prolific of the human body, bone marrow being the first. This means that hair is extremely sensitive to changes going on within the body.
How long will my Hair grow ??

 

Your hair grows in phases. The hair growth cycle consists of three distinct stages:
 
•anagen
•catagen
•telogen
 
At the end of each resting phase the growth phase restarts and the whole process is repeated. Each follicle has its own independent cycle, otherwise all your hair would fall out at once! Instead you only lose a certain number of hairs a day. The cycle can be disrupted by metabolic circumstances and even by external trauma, such as too much pulling or brushing.

A growing stage that lasts an average of three to five years. During its growth phase, hair grows about 1.25 centimeters a month - faster in summer than in winter.
catagen
A short transition phase that lasts two weeks.
telogen
A resting phase that lasts three months.
How Much Hair Should I loss In A Day ???
The average number of hairs on the human scalp is 120,000. With 120,000 hairs and an average growth phase of four years, you can afford to lose 75-80 hairs a day.
 
All of this depends on the individual hair cycle, which in turn depends on the inherited hair type – which is genetically controlled

 The middle layer of the skin, below the epidermis and above subcutaneous tissue. It is composed of connective tissue in which is embedded hair follicles, sweat glands, superficial and deeper blood vessels, and nerve fibers.
 
Dermoscopy (surface microscopy):Definition:
 Also known as dermatoscopy and epiluminescence microscopy. A noninvasive technique for examining a pigmented or non-pigmented lesion to assess anatomic structures that are not visible to the unaided eye. Surface microscopy may be done with the lesion covered with mineral oil, or with the lesion dry. When done with mineral oil, the oil is used to coat the lesion, then the lesion is examined with magnification (hand lens, dermatoscope, or computerized digital imaging.) Surface microscopy complements other diagnostic techniques and may help determine which skin lesions require biopsy or removal
